Teacher Training and Consultation

Dear teachers, administrators, principals and parents:

  • I start this entry with some revealing facts from two scientific studies (on in the UK and one in the US) about teachers and their current lack of training surrounding ADHD.
  • And I finish it up with a great link to a resourceful site that introduces teachers to hundreds of suggestions (from other teachers) of techniques and suggestions that have worked for them in the classroom when working with ADHD students.

A study in the United Kingdom from a couple of years ago found that 2/3 of primary school teachers struggle to understand and manage ADHD behavior because of a lack of training. This is despite teachers playing a vital role in helping to diagnose and manage ADHD.

Here are a few notes from the online PsychCentral article reviewing the study about what was discovered:

Only 35% of teachers had received any training in understanding or managing ADHD behavior.

• Teachers with training were more likely to work in partnership with parents — suggesting that training for teachers could help create a more positive learning environment for children displaying ADHD behavior.

• “It is ‘crucial’ that teachers are provided with better training in understanding and managing ADHD behavior.” Study author Dr. Sheheryar Jovindah, child and adolescent psychiatry consultant, Mount Gould Hospital

In the US: a national survey performed by Unique Logic + Technology of more than 250 superintendents, directors, principals, and teachers found that only 22% of the respondents believe their school accommodates the needs of ADHD students and only 19% indicated their college/university adequately prepared them to teach ADHD students.

Here are some notes from the article in ADDitude magazine that reported on the study’s findings:

• “We encounter some parents who are in deep denial about their child’s needs. Parents must work as partners with schools rather than adopt an adversarial role,” Texas School Teacher

“There are positive characteristics of individuals with ADHD and these need to be focused on more than the negative aspects.” Tennessee Educator

• “Most administrators feel very limited in the most current information and/or data they have regarding ADHD students. It would be tremendously helpful for new teachers to have a factual base on ADHD, so they may dispel some of the myths that are associated with this disorder.” Texas School Administrator

Here in the US, 5% of elementary school children have ADHD. That’s one in 20 students, in every classroom in America. These students need great teachers who care about them and their learning styles. But how can your teachers help? How can they be prepared?
