Explaining a Diagnosis to Your Child…

May 21st, 2010 by admin

Do you know for sure that your son or daughter has ADHD? If they have not been diagnosed, the first step is evaluation and assessment by a qualified professional. Once a young child has been positively diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, you will want to explain that diagnosis to them.

I agree with Dr. Edward Hallowell in his excellent column on ADDITUDE magazine: “Often, the best approach is for both the child’s parents and his doctor to tell the child he has ADHD and to answer the question, “What is ADHD?”  In any case, the news should always be framed positively.

I specialize in Comprehensive Educational Evaluation & Assessment and am licensed and well-qualified after years of training and working with ADHD children and adults to diagnose learning disabilities, ADHD, fetal alcohol syndrome, behavioral/social problems, and/or other conditions that may interfere with learning and social functioning.

My goal is to discover your child’s natural strengths and explore ways to utilize those strengths to enhance her or his potential and performance. My approach is to then focus on “what do we do now” rather than just diagnosing the problem.

  • Initial evaluation and assessment is designed to identify and quantify the severity of your child’s learning disabilities and attention deficits.
  • At completion of initial assessment, I will recommend specific “next steps” tailored for your child. I look forward to hearing from you.
